ResMed
ResMed is an Australian company that was founded by Peter C. Farrell in 1989. Its main mission was to design, develop and manufacture an affordable and effective device for the management and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing. It was Farrell’s vision to make available an affordable CPAP machine for public consumption. The company has now manufacturing plants in the United States, France and Singapore, employing more than 4,000 people and operating in more than 100 countries.
RedMed cemented a partnership with Johnson & Johnson’s LifeScan in 2009. The merger helped bring about greater awareness of obstructive sleep apnoea with patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Co-morbidities such as stroke, obesity and cardiovascular diseases were linked to untreated OSA and other sleep disorders.
OSA products of ResMed were sold as devices, humidifiers, masks and other accessories. CPAP machines are branded as S9 Elite™, AirSense™ 10 Elite and S9 Escape™. APAP devices are S9 Escape Auto™, AirSense™10 AutoSet™ for Her, Airsense™10 AutoSet™ and S9 AutoSet™ with H5i humidifier.
Philips Respironics
Don Spence of Pennsylvania, USA founded Respironics in 1976 for the manufacture of endotracheal and tracheostomy, and anesthesia masks. The very first CPAP machine for the management and treatment of sleep apnoea was introduced in 1985. The Bi-level technology, used for the management and treatment of other breathing disorders was patented in 1992.
Respironics was acquired by Philips in 2008 and today Philips Respironics is a leading manufacturer of CPAP and BiPAP machines, oxygen concentrators, , infant apneas monitors for SIDS-risk infants, solutions for the treatment of asthma and hospitals ventilators. Its line of products includes CPAP and BiPAP devices called System One. Some of these are: PR System One REMstar Pro C-Flex+ CPAP; PR System One REMstar CPAP Machine and Humidifier; Philips Respironics line of products includes devices, masks and accessories. Under devices are CPAP and BiPAP machines branded as System One. The list of products is quite extensive. Fisher & Paykel Healthcare
Fisher & Paykel Appliance Holdings Ltd was established in 1934. Fisher & Paykel was in the import of refrigerators, radios and washing machines. In 1938 it partnered with Kelvinator and in the 1950s branched into the manufacture of products using its own technology. F&P branched out in the healthcare industry in the 1960s with a prototype respiratory humidifier for ICU patients.
In 2001, Sir Woolf Fisher and Maurice Paykel established Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in New Zealand as a separate company to manufacture CPAP machines, neonatal care products and respiratory humidifiers. Products include F&P ICON™ + Premo and F&P ICON™ + Novo and F&P ICON™+ FAMILY including F&P ICON™ +Auto.
